Some love stories never end—even if they never truly began.

The One that Didn't Get Away

Logline:

In the twilight of his life, a man creates a vivid, imagined world where he and the love of his life live a perfect existence together, only for the truth to surface when she returns to fulfill a decades-old promise: “Together at the end, Corporal.”

Dave Perez, a soldier turned dreamer, spends his final years lost in a life of his own creation—a perfect world where he and his one true love, Lesley, build a family, navigate milestones, and grow old together. But as the story in his mind unfolds, the cracks of reality begin to show.

Years after their brief but passionate connection during their Army days, Lesley finds herself at a reunion, revisiting the past they shared. Their rekindled emotions culminate in one final night together, sparking a lifetime of letters from Dave that chronicle the family he dreamed they would share.

Now in a nursing home, with his mind clouded by dementia, Dave’s imagined world has ended, leaving only his unwritten letters behind. Lesley, now widowed and carrying a bundle of those letters, visits him one last time. Her arrival reveals the poignant truth: Dave’s entire post-war life was a fabrication—a beautiful, heart-wrenching love story he wrote to keep himself alive.

As Lesley reads his letters, honoring his imagined life and the family they never had, she fulfills the promise they made so long ago: “Together at the end, Corporal.”.
